And the app has just been updated with hands-free controls for video content. Gesture control is becoming a more common way to interact with technology. The Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 features the Double Tap gesture where users can interact with the wearable device without touching the screen.

The upcoming Apple Vision Pro also offers a number of gesture to interact with content.

In a blog post, Readdle said it was inspired by that technology when creating Air Gestures:

Air Gestures in Documents is not just about adding a feature; it’s about aligning with the evolving landscape of user-centric and touch-free technology. This move parallels the direction seen in other innovative products like Apple Vision Pro and the Apple Watch Series 9, emphasizing our commitment to intuitive and accessible technology.

Gesture-based control is becoming increasingly commonplace in various technologies, from automotive interfaces to smart home devices. Recognizing this shift, Air Gestures in Documents harnesses the simplicity and intuitiveness of hand gestures, transforming them into powerful tools for digital interaction.

When playing a video, you can use gestures to pause/play and forward/rewind content. Turn on Air Gesture by headed to Settings > Video Player in the app.

Using the gestures will require use of the device’s front camera. For privacy, all of the recognition processing is done directly on the device and not sent to the cloud.

You will need to keep your hand in focus of the camera and at a reasonable distance from the screen.
