Today Meta has announced that ad-free subscriptions for both Facebook and Instagram are going to become available in the UK “over the coming weeks”.
These will give you the option to pay a fee to stop seeing ads on either service. The subscription cost will be £2.99 per month on the web and £3.99 per month if you subscribe on iOS or Android. The latter is more expensive because of the fees that Apple and Google charge through their stores.
These prices are for the first account listed in your Account Center. For every subsequent one, you only pay £2 (on the web) or £3 (on iOS or Android) extra.
This move comes “in response to recent UK regulatory guidance and following extensive engagement with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO)”, Meta says. Facebook and Instagram will begin notifying UK users over 18 that they have this choice of using the services without seeing ads.
A decision to subscribe will ensure you see no ads on all of your Facebook and Instagram accounts that are added to your Meta Accounts Center, provided you paid for all of them of course. If you choose not to subscribe, you’ll get the same experience as now, with personalized ads.
