Travelers at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport have a new way to experience Phoenix’s story of growth and ingenuity through a large-scale photo mural.

Desert Innovation is a museum installation of historic and contemporary images along the post-security passenger bridge between the A and D gates in Terminal 4. Presented by the Phoenix Airport Museum, the mural celebrates the talent, industries and ideas shaping greater Phoenix. It invites travelers to explore how the region developed as a corridor for creativity and resilience, from ancient canal systems to today’s semiconductor manufacturing.

The project is a partnership between Phoenix Sky Harbor and the Greater Phoenix Economic Council. The mural features key industries and blends historic context with modern imagery and data to tell the story of greater Phoenix’s past, present and future.

Desert Innovation highlights sectors that continue to drive the region forward, including aerospace and defense, biosciences, advanced manufacturing, climate technology and startup innovation.

The Phoenix Airport Museum is one of the nation’s largest airport art programs and highlights Arizona’s art, history and culture. Art appears throughout the airport in artist‑designed floors, ceilings, murals and rotating exhibitions.

The museum manages more than 900 artworks and more than 40 exhibition spaces, many accessible pre‑security at all hours. Its collections include fine art, historic aviation materials, photographs and cultural objects from regional artists, collectors and cultural organizations.

New exhibitions are offered throughout the year, and programs such as artist talks and tours help visitors connect with the museum. Installations such as Form Over Function: Ceramics from the Phoenix Airport Museum’s Collection and Rooted & Rising give travelers meaningful insight into the region’s creativity and heritage.
