As we celebrate Native American Heritage Month this November, we also honor the legacy of Tribal Nations in Arizona and the benefits that Tribal Gaming brings to our state. Through Tribal Gaming, the gaming tribes of Arizona have contributed nearly $2.3 billion to support diverse sectors across Arizona. For over two decades, these contributions have played a vital role in enriching local communities, strengthening our economy, and enhancing essential services that benefit all Arizonans.
The Arizona Benefits Fund: A Legacy of Support
Central to the impact of Tribal Gaming is the Arizona Benefits Fund, a shared revenue source established to ensure that gaming revenues make meaningful contributions across the state. This Fund represents more than just monetary support; it reflects a commitment by Tribes in Arizona to empower communities, advance public welfare, and nurture the natural and cultural resources of Arizona.
The Arizona Department of Gaming recently announced that in October 2024, the cumulative contributions from Tribal Gaming revenues to education alone surpassed an impressive $1 billion. This milestone underscores how Tribal Gaming is enduringly impacting educational resources in Arizona. Revenues are allocated to support teacher compensation, reduce class sizes, prevent student dropout, and improve educational opportunities for Arizona’s children. This investment is vital to the future success of our youth and the communities in which they live.
Tribal Gaming Supporting Essential Services
In addition to education, Tribal Gaming revenues significantly benefit emergency services, trauma care, and public safety. With $499 million dedicated to these critical areas, gaming revenues have strengthened Arizona’s capacity to respond effectively to emergencies, safeguarding the health and well-being of residents across the state. Trauma centers, emergency response teams, and related facilities have received necessary funding to enhance their services and resources—benefits that support every resident and visitor to Arizona.
Moreover, Tribal Gaming has provided $259 million to cities, towns, and counties throughout Arizona, supporting projects and programs that directly benefit the public. These funds have been instrumental in expanding public services, improving infrastructure, and fostering economic development. By partnering with municipal governments, Tribal Gaming actively contributes to the quality of life in our communities.
Boosting Tourism and Protecting Wildlife
Tourism is a vital economic sector for Arizona, and Tribal Gaming has contributed $142 million to bolster tourism efforts, further boosting the state’s economy and creating jobs for Arizonans. These funds are used to promote Arizona’s unique attractions, drive visitation, and support the cultural heritage of Tribal Nations, which in turn enriches Arizona’s tourism profile.
Tribal Gaming also prioritizes Arizona’s environmental heritage, with $142 million allocated to wildlife conservation. Arizona’s diverse ecosystems are home to unique wildlife and natural landscapes that must be protected for future generations. These funds support habitat preservation, biodiversity initiatives, and conservation efforts that sustain Arizona’s rich environmental heritage.
The Broader Impact: A Commitment to a Better Arizona
Tribal Gaming is more than just a source of revenue; it’s a powerful partnership between Tribal Nations and the state that uplifts communities, strengthens economies, and preserves our shared resources. This November, during Native American Heritage Month, we recognize and celebrate the role that Tribal Gaming in Arizona plays in making our state a better place to live, work, and thrive.
Supporting Tribal Gaming is not just about supporting Tribal communities; it’s about investing in the future of Arizona as a whole, with impact resonating across the state, ensuring that all share its benefits.
