On January 17, the Supreme Court ruled to uphold the TikTok ban, which was signed into law by President Biden last April. The future of the app, which has 170 million U.S. users, is up in the air. Biden’s administration announced that the president wouldn’t enforce the law when the ban goes into effect, which is Sunday, January 19. Instead, the outgoing president will leave TikTok’s fate up to incoming President Trump, whose incoming national security advisor said the administration wants to keep the app.
What exactly will happen to TikTok on Sunday is unclear. It may be that only new users won’t be able to download the app (due to fines app stores face having TikTok in their stores), or that TikTok will go dark, making it completely unusable in the U.S.
