Samsung’s official shipping date for the Galaxy S24 Ultra is today, even though we’ve seen it become available a bit early in some places. So now that you can just go and grab one from a store without the need to pre-order, you may be wondering how that titanium build holds up – the new Gorilla Armor too.
Thankfully, Zack over at JerryRigEverything has just the video for you, making the S24 Ultra undergo his traditional ‘durability test’ which involves scratches, burns, and of course – the bend test. Let’s grab some popcorn and watch it together.
In case you couldn’t watch for whatever reason, here’s the nitty gritty. First off, it’s important to note that Samsung doesn’t mention which grade of titanium it’s using – Apple uses grade 5, which is one of two most prevalent ones, the other being grade 2. Grade 5 titanium is more expensive than grade 2 titanium, which is why companies using grade 5 generally boast about it and those using grade 2 stay mum.
We can’t really be sure if that’s the case with Samsung – after all, it massively upgraded the speakers in the S24 series without telling anyone. Anyway, on to the test. The Gorilla Armor glass on top of the screen finely scratches at level 6 on the Mohs hardness scale, but there’s a twist. There are no “deeper grooves at level 7” this time around. The marks are there, they’re just not as deep as on other types of glass, so the Gorilla Armor definitely seems to be more than just hype. Those deeper grooves only actually show up at level 8, which is a first in the mobile world.
The titanium isn’t scratch-proof, so of course it does actually scratch. It’s unclear if the buttons are titanium or an aluminum alloy. The S Pen gets dismantled to show its innards, and pixels last about 30 seconds under a flame before going white and not recovering.
Finally, the S24 Ultra survives the bend test with flying colors. There is a tiny flex when bending from both sides, but there’s absolutely no cracking whatsoever.
